Empty Bowls for Hunger Awareness at Libby’s Bistro

A community hunger awareness dinner as a fundraiser to benefit Senior Meals of Coös County. “Empty Bowls” is a national project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a local community level. The event of Empty Bowls sponsored by Eversource will take place at Chef Liz Jackson’s restaurant Libby’s & SaALT in Gorham, New Hampshire. On October 28th 4-8pm, Empty Bowls tickets price of $35 will include a hearty meal, a handmade clay bowl from the Assemble Makerspace pottery studio, to highlight and benefit Seniors Hunger Awareness and the programs under the nonprofit Tri-County Community Action Program, Inc (TCCAP).
In the past year, Senior Meals of Coös County served nearly 130,000 nutritious meals to seniors at our 15 congregate meal sites and home deliveries, in addition to the other social programs and trips that North Country seniors enjoyed. Approximately 1,600 seniors participated in our programs, and 145 volunteered their time. Socialization and fighting loneliness is as worthy a goal as the nutrition aspect of the meals served. Many seniors say this is the only social contact they may encounter in a week.
Senior Meals congregate sites gives mobile older adults an opportunity to interact and enjoy hot, nutritious meals with others. Diners have a chance to meet new people and share interests. Senior Meal locations include Berlin, Colebrook and Whitefield. Senior Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious meals, a daily safety check and friendly interaction to home-bound seniors in Coös County who are unable to shop or cook for themselves, helping them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain living independently in their homes for as long as possible. “We here at Senior Meals of Coös County value opportunity to be part of our client’s lives, allowing them to age with integrity and remain a part of their community through continued health and nutrition. For Empty Bowls, event food will be created by Chef Liz Jackson & her husband Steve are the founders of Libby’s & SAaLT on Main Street in Gorham. Tucked in the Northern White Mountains, this restaurant’s owners are creators of a seasonal, locally sourced, funky fine dining, worldly menu, and renowned James Beard Best Chef nominee since 1997.
Bowls are made in the clay studio at Assemble, Makerspace Artist Studios which is a group of artists and makers in a shared art studio. Bowl making guided sessions are available to up to twelve sign-ups at no cost to join in the making of the handcrafted clay bowls for the event. “Empty Bowls is a truly gratifying project to be a part of. Bringing students, many of them seniors, through the entire process of crafting a handmade bowl, to the eating of a lovely meal out of that piece- and all to benefit an amazing cause is really a high point in my career as an artist and teacher.” Maria Neal, Studio Potter. TCCAP and Eversource look to highlight Hunger Awareness Month and to benefit Senior Center, Berlin Senior Meals, and Meals on Wheels. This event is designed to fundraise to cover the gaps in funding due to the increasing cost of food and supplies.
