The Family Mediation Program
provides free and confidential services to Coös and Carroll County families in conflict with
adolescents. Trained Lead and Volunteer Mediators use an
established neutral process for dispute resolution. The mediators act as
facilitators, enabling the participants to negotiate solutions to serious
family disagreements. The process includes helping both parties learn new
ways to resolve conflicts that may have resulted in a breakdown of
communication or unwillingness to cooperate.
The Family Mediation Program is
specifically aimed at parents and youth between the ages of ten and
eighteen. Mediation is meant to be short term conflict resolution and
not a replacement for individual or family therapy.
Family Mediation is a Tri-County CAP Youth

The program model being used by our Family Mediation
Program relies on trained Volunteer Mediators from
the community. Volunteer recruitment is ongoing, and training sessions are
held periodically to develop new Volunteer Mediators.
After successfully completing training, Volunteer
Mediators work in paired teams, “co-mediating” with each family using
the service. This provides an “internship” period for newly-trained
mediators to work with experienced mediators. It also offers the
opportunity for peer supervision, support, and continuing growth and
development as mediators by learning from each other.
