Family Mediation
is a voluntary and confidential process through which family members learn
to communicate with each other and deal with both the everyday issues and
major conflicts. Two trained volunteer mediators meet with the family for a
number of sessions to help them define the issues and arrive at mutually
agreed upon solutions. The role of the mediators is to provide guidance on
the art of listening and communicating, not to make recommendations or
suggestions on how to resolve the issues.
Mediation is neither arbitration nor does it take the place of
counseling. All parties must agree to it voluntarily and work together
to come up with their own solutions. Mediation can be between adults or
adults and children.
